Multiple sclerosis is a multi-system disease. An interdisciplinary rehabilitation has already been a routine approach in many countries. The ABC (Avonex, Betaseron, Copaxone) choices in MS treatment together with multidisciplinary services provide the best outcome. Nevertheless there is growing interest in "complementary" treatments among Persons with MS. Recent surveys indicate that many Persons with MS seek these treatments and find satisfaction in some of them.
It seems logical that health professionals should become familiar with these "complementary" approaches in order to be able to advice their patients and clients.

In our practice different educational techniques (tapes, books, handouts, lectures) about additional approaches to interdisciplinary rehabilitation were provided. If accepted, we applied them.
We will describe these techniques (relaxation, visualization, Feldenkrais, Yoga etc.). We will discuss their impact on the rehabilitation process of Persons with MS.
Some Persons with MS discovered those techniques and applied them on their own without any professional influence until later on. More frequently suggestions and education came from us from the very beginning of the rehabilitation process, as soon as it was clear that a patient is willing to accept and to learn them. When those approaches were incorporated into our rehabilitation program, more often than usual, and even unexpectedly an improvement in functionality (walking, strength and dexterity), as well as higher self esteem and self understanding were observed.

We will present case studies and life philosophies of Persons with MS who were able to overcome their physical and psychological obstacles.

Our experience from the US and from Poland draws conclusions that an exploration of different integrative approaches during the rehabilitation process may be important in the multidimensional rehabilitation of Persons with MS. In countries with economical obstacles and difficulties to provide the ABC treatment to all those who need to be treated Multidimensional Rehabilitation may enhance results of available treatments. It may decrease impact of side effects. It may bring better results of interdisciplinary rehabilitation.

The Polish MS Society started educational courses for health professionals as well as for Persons with MS entitled "Multidimensional Rehabilitation of Persons with MS in Poland". We would like to share this experience with you.
