The Foundation for Helping Physically Disabled Mathematicians and Computer Scientists
was founded in 1990- at first as an enterprise for those working in the Institute of
Computer Science, PAN, in supprt of handicapped friends. The main statutory focus of the
Foundation is the professional and social rehabilitation of the physically disabled, not
only mathematicians and computer scientists, but all who can use a computer as a tool to
do professional work (often with the use of a modem and telephone).
The Foundation has under its immediate care, over 100 participants of the program who
are helped in acquiring, supplementing, and updating their knowledge of computer science,
obtain access to equipment and software as well as technical literature. The most
important is the help of getting jobs (part time as well as full time) that are
appropriate for their abilities and changing health conditions. The Foundation also tries
to assure care to those who need it most.

In 1997, the Foundation moved to a new, finally permanent location ( ul.Twarda 51/51,
obtained from the Polish Academy of Sciences). In KLABIR, those who are disabled, may
learn free of charge, while all others, pay. The lecturers teaching the courses are often
former participants of the program; a group of physically handicapped lecturers able to
join the work force includes, at the present, 19 people. In 1997, a total of 270 people
took part in professional training in developing and managing computer applications-138 of
them were handicapped participant. Out of these, almost 50 became prepared for telework.
The training was available at introductory , advanced, and technical levels (this includes
courses for using text editors, finance-bookkeeping, Corel Draw, using the Internet and
telework, and creating pages on the World Wide Web).
Now, participants of the program can undertake part time and full time jobs. In 1997,
the Foundation acquired 167 job offers for the disabled. These included: operating
personnel for a Polsat contest, creating databases for JTT computers, working on a
multimeda encyclopedia and dictionary of the Polish language, PWN. Most of these jobs were
accomplished as telework. Since 1997, the Club of Guidance and Intervention has been in
full bloom in KLABIR. Monthly meetings, phone counceling, mutual aid, individual and group
meetings with potential employers are just some of the things that take place through this
club.
During 1996 and 1997, the Foundation designed a sequence of classes helping those
physically handicapped suffering from professional and social indifference. These classes,
called the Professional Activation Studio, lasting a couple of months, attracted, in 1997,
40 disabled people-18 of these being in wheelchairs. From among these, 70% already hold
jobs.

The first knot (IdN1) - The Internet for the Handicapped
http://www.idn.org.pl
Remotely administered from KLABIR
In 1996, the participants of the Second Forum of TeleInformatics (Legionowo 3-5 October
1996) took up the initiative „Internet for the Handicapped" in order to ease
handicapped people’s access to Internet information resources, as well as to alternative
methods of communication and carrying out work. The main creator of the site, Marek Car,
died in 1997. He was also the president of the Polish Community of the Internet and the
president of Polska Online. The group of initiators included: Telekomunikacja Polska S.A.,
IBM Polska, Microsoft in Poland S.p. z o.o., Poland Online, the Department of „Internet
for the Schools" of the „Development of Community Democracy Froundation" and
the „Foundation for Physically Handicapped Mathematicians and Computer Scientists"
which was also charged with the task of the first knot-"Internet for the
Handicapped"-IdN1.
The following initiators will join in the near future:
- The Stephan Bartory Foundation,
- The Canadian Embassy,
- Cisco Poland,
- Solidex,
- Karma Polish International Group S.p. z o.o.,
- TCH Components,
- TCH Systems, and
- Siemens Sp. z o.o.
The first knot of the „Internet for the Handicapped" is already operating. It is
administered from KLABIR by its unlimited connection to the Internet. It enables to work
and learn from home, therefore making it possible to incorporate the idea of telework and
tele-education into life. It also provides contact with the outside world for many
physically handicapped. We offer an email account free of charge, as well as room on the
World Wide Web for the physically disabled.
The Foundation also supports the establishing of local units IdN in Poland. In KLABIR,
there are also open courses in accord with the „Internet Cafe."
